Everybody wants whiter teeth. Your smile is one of the first things others will notice and will leave a lasting impression! Tooth whitening can be a effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. Giving you a brighter whiter smile!
Throughout life teeth will discolour with age and food substances e.g.such as tea, coffee, red wine. Some people may have staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth which take up stains.
What does Tooth Whitening involve?
Professional bleaching is the most common form of tooth whitening. Whitening can be carried in the following ways:
We will advise you of the best way forward to improve the appearance of your teeth.
Professional Home Whitening
Your dentist will need to make a custom fit tray and will take impressions for this at the first appointment. On the second visit the tray and some whitening gel will be provided for you to use at home.
The gel has the product hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. This is broken down, oxygen gets into the enamel on the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter.
How often do I wear the trays?
The trays with the gel should be worn a minimum of two hours a day on daily basis, but most patients tend to wear them over night.
How long does it take?
If the instructions are followed maximum results are seen usually after 10-14 days of use.
Professional Chairside Whitening with ZOOM!
This is laser whitening or ‘power whitening’. During this procedure a protective rubber dam is put over your teeth to protect the gums, and whitening gel is used with the Zoom! light. The light speeds up the chemical reaction of the whitening product and the colour change can be achieved more quickly using this procedure. Laser whitening is said to make teeth up to on average eight shades lighter.
How long does it take?
Your dentist will need to assess your teeth to make sure that you are suitable for the treatment. The procedure can take as little as one hour to give you a whiter new smile!
Is Whitening safe?
Extensive clinical research and studies have shown that teeth whitening under the supervision of your dentist is safe. As with any tooth whitening product it is not recommended for children under 16, pregnant or lactating women and patients undergoing PUVA therapy/chemotherapy or patients who
have melanomas. If you take light sensitive drugs please consult you
physician.
Are there any side effects?
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
How long do the results last?
Your teeth will become whiter than they once were. There may be a need to “touch up” once or twice a year. This is a simple process of wearing your custom trays with the gel in for 1-2 days.
The effect is best achieved if you reduce smoking, or eating or drinking products that can stain your teeth.
